Due to interest, need or higher pay, some EMTs choose to get more advanced training and certifications. These positions can include Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians (AEMTs) to specialized advanced paramedic options like Critical Care Paramedics (CCP). At EMS PRO we understand the value of advanced training for better results for patients across the US.
WHAT IS AN ADVANCED EMT AND HOW DO YOU CERTIFY AS ONE?
When choosing the path to join the ranks of the EMS world, you can decide between getting initial certification in four different fields. The NREMT, which is the nationally based certification testing for EMTs, is the agency which certifies the positions. This allows you to take your certification with you to any state in the US. Those jobs include:
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
- Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT)
- Paramedic
The difference between an EMT and AEMT is the addition of some advanced emergency medical care knowledge. Becoming an AEMT allows you to gain higher pay, but isn’t as difficult to obtain as a paramedic certification is. Advanced EMT skills include an understanding of the basic and advanced use of equipment found on an ambulance. The AEMT scope of practice combines being able to care for critical and emergent patients. AEMT classes and training can be found at local technical colleges or other certified institutions that even provide online courses.
